Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress party during a public rally in Ambikapur, the capital of Surguja district in Chhattisgarh. He accused the Congress of having contentious plans to seize the assets and rights of the people.

Modi lambasted the Congress for its proposal to introduce an inheritance tax, insinuating that the party aimed to redistribute people’s wealth unfairly. Pointing to Rahul Gandhi and Sam Pitroda, he claimed that Congress advisors were advocating for increased taxes on hard-working individuals.

During his speech, Modi referenced Pitroda’s remarks made in America about the inheritance tax law. He suggested that the Congress party was aiming to strip assets from individuals’ children, casting a negative shadow on families’ financial legacies.

Addressing the crowd, Modi emphasized the cultural significance of passing down wealth and questioned the Congress’s motives in wanting to disrupt this traditional practice.

Furthermore, Modi accused the Congress of planning an intrusive financial survey that would intrude on households and confiscate personal belongings in an attempt to redistribute them.

Sam Pitroda later clarified that his comments were taken out of context and purely theoretical, unrelated to the Congress manifesto. Inheritance tax laws in America affect estates valued over a certain threshold, which only a small percentage of the population ends up paying.

The Estate Duty Act and the Income Tax Act in India also have a historical relevance to wealth redistribution, with the former being abolished due to complexity and concerns of double taxation.

Modi’s comments stirred a fierce debate between the BJP and Congress, revealing underlying differences in economic ideologies that resonate with India’s rich history of wealth distribution policies.
