Rhode Island and Oregon Celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day with Varied Activities
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — In observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has announced changes to its service schedule. On Monday, October 14, RIPTA will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule. RIPTA offices will generally be closed, except for the Newport Transportation Center. Flex Services will be unavailable on this day, with the exception of Route 203, which encompasses URI, Narragansett, and South Kingstown. This route will operate on the Sunday schedule from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additionally, the RIde program will adopt the holiday schedule.
Meanwhile, in Oregon, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated with a series of events across various educational institutions and communities. Portland State University‘s Native American Student and Community Center will host a day of free activities celebrating Indigenous culture, culminating with the play “Diné Nishłį (i am a sacred being) Or, A Boarding School Play” by Blossom Johnson. These events are scheduled for Saturday, October 12, at the NASCC building.
Clackamas Community College will also be celebrating with its annual event featuring storytelling, music, and cultural performances honoring Indigenous communities both locally and nationally. Set to take place on Sunday, October 13, at the Environmental Learning Center in Oregon City, the event promises a variety of activities and artisan vendor displays.
At Oregon State University in Corvallis, events include hands-on demonstrations of traditional cultural activities, with a live music concert scheduled for Monday evening. In addition, the University of Oregon will recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day with an art walk and reception, featuring Indigenous artists.
Further celebrations include panel discussions at Central Oregon Community College in Bend, focusing on topics such as cultural appropriation in higher education. Events in Salem and at Reed College will extend the celebrations with performances and educational presentations.
To accommodate these celebrations, certain services and governmental offices will have adjusted operations. Federal offices and courts will remain closed, while many state and local government offices and facilities in Oregon will be open. Holiday restrictions apply to some services such as mail delivery, with the United States Postal Service closing its offices for the day.
