Sen. Cory Booker Engaged to Alexis Lewis After Romantic Proposal

Washington, D.C. — New Jersey Senator Cory Booker announced his engagement to girlfriend Alexis Lewis this week. The proposal took place in Kauai, Hawaii, where Booker surprised Lewis with a heartfelt moment.
Booker, 56, shared details of the proposal with reporters on Tuesday. He explained that a friend had planned a surprise Hawaiian greeting for Lewis. She expected to receive traditional leis, but was astonished to find a hula dancer and other performers waiting for them.
“She thought we were going down just to have leis put over us. And we walked out, and it was a whole show, with a ukulele player and dancers,” Booker recounted. “Then a song that she had mentioned wanting at her wedding was performed, and she was overjoyed. I then told her, ‘Honey, this is actually the song being performed at your engagement.’”
Booker added that in that moment, Lewis was so overwhelmed, she didn’t fully process the engagement at first. He joked, “She said that that’s when she blacked out. I had to show her pictures of me on my knees to tell her I got on a knee.”
Lewis is currently a vice president of investments at Brasa Capital Management and has a background in economic development from her time working in the Los Angeles mayor’s office.
This is Booker’s first engagement, and his personal life has been closely scrutinized. In 2013, during his Senate campaign, he addressed speculation about his sexuality by emphasizing that it was irrelevant to his ability to serve.
“The question really should not be whether I’m gay or straight, the question should be why the heck are you asking the question in the first place?” he said at the time.
Social media has responded positively to the news of Booker’s engagement, with supportive comments flooding in. Actress Jurnee Smollett, among others, posted congratulations on Instagram.
Booker is also preparing for a crucial budget battle in Washington, promising to “stand and fight” to protect Americans from harmful budget decisions. He declared, “This is a time to draw a line. I am standing and fighting against any kind of budget proposal that’s going to hurt Americans or hurt people in New Jersey.”
