Sweden has achieved a significant milestone in its bid to join NATO, as Hungary‘s parliament has ratified its membership, consolidating the alliance’s influence in Northern Europe and the Baltic region.

The approval by Hungary marks the end of a 21-month process since Sweden submitted its application in response to Russia‘s incursion into Ukraine.

With the conflict in Ukraine now in its third year and concerns about the strengthening of NATO, Sweden’s inclusion in the organization will enhance Europe‘s security amidst fears of potential future Russian aggression.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed the significance of this step, highlighting the nation’s departure from 200 years of neutrality and non-alignment.

The passage of Sweden’s NATO membership is expected to be completed shortly, following the submission of ratification documents to the US State Department and an invitation from Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
