Trump Awards Medal of Freedom to Late Commentator Charlie Kirk’s Widow

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative activist Charlie Kirk‘s widow, Erika, on what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday. The ceremony took place at the White House Rose Garden on Tuesday and remembered Kirk, who was assassinated in September.
Kirk was known for galvanizing a younger generation of conservatives to engage in politics and support Trump’s candidacy leading up to the 2024 election. Despite his influence, Kirk faced criticism for his views, particularly on LGBTQ rights and his comments about the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
During an emotional ceremony, Trump spoke highly of Kirk, calling him a “fearless warrior for liberty” and “a giant of his generation.” He praised Erika for her strength and offered condolences, saying, “We’ll never forget what your family has sacrificed for our country.”
Erika Kirk, accepting the award on behalf of her late husband, reflected on his faith and suggested he might have pursued a presidential run had he lived. “He would only have done it if that was something that he believed his country needed,” she said.
Erika also addressed Trump’s depiction of her husband’s love for his enemies, humorously noting, “I heard he loved his enemies. And I said: ‘Wait a minute, is that the same Charlie that I know?’”
Kirk, who was the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University, an event that sparked concerns over free speech after the administration revoked visas for six foreign nationals who commented negatively about Kirk’s assassination.
Notable guests at the ceremony included various officials and personal allies of Trump, reflecting Kirk’s significant ties to the administration. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States, with past recipients including various distinguished individuals spanning diverse fields.
Trump emphasized the importance of remembering Kirk’s contributions to the political landscape, stating, “We’re entering his name forever into the eternal roster of true American heroes.” Kirk is survived by Erika and their two young children.
