Vote Now for Florida’s Most Famous Floridian

FORT MYERS, Florida — The USA TODAY Network-Florida is closing in on its search for the most famous Floridian. As of September 24, the list has been narrowed down to five iconic figures, including a historic American inventor, three legendary musicians, and a celebrated actor. This follows an extensive polling process involving a total of 150 famous individuals connected to Florida.
Voting began to identify the most famous Floridian, with readers initially selecting their top 50 contenders. The fourth round of voting concluded on September 21, trimming the nominees to the final five. Leading the list is the late singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, followed closely by musician Tom Petty and actor Burt Reynolds.
The rules for the final round are straightforward: participants can vote for their favorite from the top five options until the poll closes at 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 28. The results will be announced on October 2.
Jimmy Buffett, celebrated for his beach-themed songs and lifestyle, moved to Key West in the 1970s where he gained fame. Although he was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Buffett embraced the Florida Keys culture, becoming known for his casual attire and laid-back personality. His Margaritaville brand, launched in 1985, now spans restaurants, resorts, and more, making him a staple of Florida culture.
Tom Petty, who originated from Gainesville, formed the rock band Mudcrutch and later established Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. A pioneer of the American rock scene, Petty passed away in 2017 due to an accidental overdose.
Actor Burt Reynolds, who starred in classic films like ‘Smokey and the Bandit,’ grew up in Michigan but became a Florida resident in his youth. He played college football for Florida State University and left a lasting legacy through his film and restaurant ventures. Reynolds died from a heart attack in 2018.
Inventor Thomas Edison reshaped Florida’s landscape by establishing his winter estate, known as Seminole Lodge, in Fort Myers. Edison’s contributions continue to influence the area, celebrated annually with the Edison Festival of Light.
Ray Charles, a pioneer of soul music, was also raised in Florida. Despite overwhelming challenges, including losing his vision at a young age, he gained fame with hits like ‘Georgia on My Mind’ and won 12 Grammy Awards throughout his legendary career.
