Woodland Adventures And Sporting Triumphs At Local Schools

The Grade Rs at The Wykeham Collegiate had a delightful morning recently, all dressed up as adorable woodland creatures. They embarked on an exciting scavenger hunt that took them all around the school grounds, where they discovered various woodland animals. The fun didn’t stop there; they also baked some delicious hedgehog cupcakes and enjoyed story time in the garden with the Grade 7 students.

Meanwhile, in sports news, the Alexandra U16 soccer boys celebrated a fantastic achievement by beating Carter High and several other schools to win the trophy in the Carter Super Cup series. Anusha Pillay and Mrs Mlotshwa were seen congratulating the victorious team.

In academic highlights, a huge round of applause goes to André Boshoff, a Grade 11 student, who scored an impressive 93% in the Afrikaans Olympiad for Afrikaans First Additional Language. His outstanding performance placed him third in KZN and seventh nationally. André, ons is baie trots op jou!

As the winter sports season wrapped up, College ended on a high note against Glenwood, with only one loss and one draw in 22 matches played. The first XV rugby team achieved a remarkable 39-20 double victory, marking their first win in nearly two decades. College’s hockey teams were also undefeated, winning all 11 matches, including a 4-1 victory for the Red Army first XI. The soccer teams had a stellar day at Clifton, winning all matches as well, while the cycling and canoeing teams produced excellent results. College’s squash players also shined by securing a 12-0 victory against PBHS ahead of the School’s Top 10 tournament.

On July 24, The Wykeham Collegiate hosted the annual Grade 8 Mike Nicholson Maths Fest, an event that has become a cherished tradition. With 15 schools and around 180 students participating, it was an exciting evening filled with teamwork and problem-solving, showcasing the talents of young mathematicians as they tackled challenging and fun math problems.

Lastly, seven talented geographers from Epworth in Grades 10 to 12 excelled in the national Geography Olympiad. Special mentions go to Akshaya Danilala and Robyn Green, who each received bronze medals for being in the top 15%, along with Amelia Nettleton and Keona Duthie, who achieved gold for ranking in the top 5%.
