Franklin, North Carolina — Country music songwriter Brett James died in a plane crash on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the age of 57. The crash resulted in the deaths of James and two other passengers, his wife Melody Carole Wilson and his stepdaughter Meryl Maxwell Wilson.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that James was piloting his Cirrus SR22T aircraft when it went down around 3 p.m. local time in a field in Franklin. The plane was registered under James’s legal name, Brett James Cornelius.

Authorities confirmed that the crash occurred shortly after taking off from Nashville’s John C. Tune Airport. Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

James’s career spanned over several decades, making him a prominent figure in country music. He was best known for writing the hit song “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” performed by Carrie Underwood, which earned a Grammy Award. James also co-wrote several other popular songs, including “Blessed” for Martina McBride and “Out Last Night” for Toby Keith.

Shortly before his death, James shared joyful moments with his family on social media. He celebrated Father’s Day with a heartfelt post featuring a family photo and also enjoyed a beach getaway with his wife in the Bahamas. Just days before the crash, Melody shared a special birthday tribute to her daughter Meryl, who had just turned 28.

Carrie Underwood expressed her grief over James’s passing, calling it “unfathomable.” She acknowledged the impact of his loss on the music community, stating, “The loss of Brett James to his family, friends and our music community is too great to put into words.” The music world is mourning the absence of a talented songwriter whose legacy will endure through his timeless songs.
