Boca Juniors Hosts Central Córdoba in Crucial Match

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Boca Juniors will host Central Córdoba Sunday evening in a key matchup in the Liga Profesional‘s Torneo Clausura. The game kicks off at 9:15 p.m. at La Bombonera, where Boca aims for its fourth win of the semester and wants to climb to the top of both the league and annual tables.
Boca’s coach, Miguel Ángel Russo, recently announced two changes in the starting lineup. Agustín Marchesín returns to goal after recovering from a muscle injury, replacing Leandro Brey. Milton Giménez will fill in for Edinson Cavani, who is sidelined due to a right psoas strain.
Despite cutting a 12-match winless streak, Boca’s form has been affected by injuries. So far this season, the team has secured 46 points and remains in contention for Copa Libertadores qualification. A victory against Central Córdoba would put them on equal footing with Unión de Santa Fe, sitting atop Zone A with 16 points.
Meanwhile, Central Córdoba is eager to bounce back following a tough 2-0 loss to Deportivo Riestra. Coach Omar De Felippe‘s squad has not had a strong showing recently, with only 13 points in Zone A. However, a win on Sunday would significantly boost their hopes of reaching the top eight qualifying positions.
Central midfielder Lucas Besozzi emphasized the importance of the match, stating, “It will be a critical game in the fight for classification. We both have the same number of points, and it will be a very important match.” Gastón Verón, a standout player for Central Córdoba, expressed confidence ahead of the game: “We want to get back to winning ways. Despite two tough defeats, we believe we are on the right path.”
Boca has dealt with an unexpected absence as Exequiel Zeballos has been ruled out of the match due to ankle discomfort. His exclusion, added to Cavani’s injury, presents challenges for Russo, particularly as he tries to establish cohesion in his lineup.
The match will be officiated by a well-known referee who has overseen multiple critical moments in Boca’s recent history.
