Basant Panchami 2024 Date: Vasant Panchami, widely recognized as Saraswati Puja, honors the Hindu deity Saraswati. This auspicious Hindu festival denotes the onset of spring and the Holi festival, usually occurring forty days prior to spring in January or February. Vasant Panchami is typically celebrated by Hindus in the Indian subcontinent, specifically in India and Nepal.

Vasant Panchami falls on the fifth day of the bright half of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Magha, which usually lands in late January or February in the Gregorian calendar. On this day, the weather showcases winter-like conditions in northern India and more spring-like ambiance in central and western regions, heralding the full bloom of spring in the upcoming 40 days of Basant Panchami festivities.

The festival, dedicated to the Goddess of wisdom, music, art, science, and technology – Saraswati, is commemorated with reverence and regards. She epitomizes creative energy and power in various forms, including love and longing. Also known as Saraswati Panchami and Shri Panchami, the day celebrates the harvest, ripening fruits, and the yellow flowers of the mustard crop.

Various traditions and rituals mark the celebration of Vasant Panchami across the nation. People adorn white or yellow attire, adorn their homes with yellow flowers, and relish sweets on this day. In Rajasthan, jasmine garlands are a common practice, while newlyweds in Maharashtra offer flowers to the deity on their first Basant Panchami post-marriage.

Sikhs and Hindus in the Punjab region don yellow turbans or headdresses, while in Uttarakhand, Shiva and Parvati are worshipped as representatives of mother earth, crops, and agriculture during Saraswati Puja. Among the customs, wearing and consuming yellow clothing is prevalent alongside the exchange of gifts and school supplies shopping.

In Pakistan, Punjabi Muslims around Lahore engage in kite-flying activities, upholding the historical and cultural significance of the Basant season in the Indian subcontinent. Basant Panchami symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, promoting a sense of renewal, creativity, and encouraging individuals to embrace the positive energies of the season.
