Contamination Alert: Henkel Recalls Tec Italy Shampoo for Health Risks

IRVINE, Calif. — Henkel Capital S.A. de C.V. is recalling over 1,000 units of Tec Italy Shampoo Totale due to contamination with Klebsiella oxytoca, a bacteria that poses serious health risks. This voluntary recall was initiated after microbiological analyses detected the bacteria in some bottles, leading to concerns for consumer safety.
The recall, affecting 1,068 units, was officially announced on March 24, 2025. Tec Italy Shampoo Totale, which is marketed for dry and damaged hair, is packaged in a green 33.81 fluid ounce (1 liter) bottle. The affected bottles are marked with lot number 1G27542266 and UPC code 7501438375850.
The shampoo was mainly distributed in New York and California, but it may have reached additional states through various retailers, including major chains like Walmart and Amazon. Henkel advises consumers who have purchased the product to discontinue use immediately and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
According to Henkel’s press release, exposure to Klebsiella oxytoca can lead to infections affecting the eyes, nose, and skin, posing greater risks for individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms of infection may include fever, chills, and cold-like symptoms. Although there have been no reports of illness related to the shampoo, Henkel is urging proactive steps from consumers.
“To date, there have been no reports of user harm or injury related to these products,” Henkel stated in the release. The company is working closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during this recall.
The FDA classified the recall as Class II, meaning that exposure to the contaminated product could result in temporary or medically reversible health effects. The agency has emphasized the importance of returning affected products immediately.
In light of this incident, health experts recommend that consumers remain vigilant about the personal care products they use and be cautious of potential contamination risks. Reports of similar recalls have recently emerged in the beauty industry, raising awareness about safety standards.
Experts raise concerns about the increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria like Klebsiella oxytoca in various products, suggesting that the microbiological safety of personal care items requires greater scrutiny in manufacturing processes.
Henkel, headquartered in Germany, is well-known for its wide range of consumer products, with North American sales of approximately $6.5 billion in 2024. The company stated, “Tec Italy seeks to minimize all inconvenience this may cause consumers and is committed to their complete satisfaction.”
For further information regarding the recall or any medical questions, consumers can reach Henkel customer service or consult their healthcare providers as needed. The FDA continues to monitor the situation closely.
