Syracuse, N.Y. — The Philadelphia Eagles are set to release quarterback Kyle McCord, a report revealed on Monday. McCord, selected in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, found himself on the outside looking in after the Eagles traded for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Howell over the weekend.

In his preseason debut for the Eagles, McCord completed 15 of 35 passes, gaining 136 yards, but he also threw an interception. After his performance, he faces uncertainty about his future in the NFL, as he could either be claimed by another team or return to the Eagles’ practice squad.

McCord’s release was anticipated after the Eagles’ roster adjustments. The team recently acquired Howell and is expected to maintain Jalen Hurts as the starting quarterback. Tanner McKee will likely assume the No. 2 position, leaving McCord competing for the third quarterback spot against Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

The Eagles edged out the New York Jets 19-17 on Friday, where McCord saw significant playing time. However, his overall preseason statistics show only 24 completions on 56 attempts, resulting in 191 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

Before joining the Eagles, McCord enjoyed a standout year with Syracuse, where he broke several Atlantic Coast Conference records. In 2024, he passed for 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns, earning accolades as an All-ACC Second-Team selection. Previously, he played three seasons at Ohio State, where he started one year and led the Buckeyes to an 11-2 record.

Head coach Nick Sirianni acknowledged McCord’s potential during practice, yet stated that it wasn’t enough for a spot on the roster. “He had some good plays and … ran the show well,” Sirianni explained after McCord’s final preseason game.

As the Eagles prepare for their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on September 4, McCord’s future remains in limbo.
