Extended Scene on New Romance Film Surprises Cast and Crew
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star in the upcoming romance film “We Live in Time,” where they portray a married couple. During a recent interview, Garfield revealed an incident that occurred while filming one of the film’s intimate scenes, which went on longer than planned due to a missed cue from the director of photography.
Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz in New York City, Garfield recounted how the pair continued filming a passionate scene after they did not hear the word “cut.” “We do the first take of this very intimate, passionate sex scene. And it’s a closed set, which means it’s only me and Florence in a room together and the camera operator, who is our DP, a very lovely man called Stewart,” Garfield explained. “The scene becomes passionate and we choreographed it and we get into it, as it were, and we go a little bit further than we were meant to just because we never heard ‘cut’ and it’s feeling safe and we’re like, ‘OK, we’ll go to the next thing,'” Garfield said during the interview.
Eventually, Garfield and Pugh realized the take was going on too long, describing that they “telepathically” knew it was a lengthy take. Garfield humorously reenacted for the podcast audience how he and Pugh found their director of photography, Stewart Bentley, and a boom operator turned away to avoid watching the scene further. “I look up, and in the corner is Stewart and our boom operator,” Garfield said, to laughs from the crowd. “Stewart has the camera by his side and he’s turned into the wall.”
Directed by John Crowley, “We Live in Time” follows the characters Almut (played by Pugh), an aspiring chef, and Tobias (played by Garfield), a recent divorcée. Their life is chronicled across several decades as they fall in love after a chance encounter. The film presents a comprehensive narrative of their life together, including becoming a family and facing personal challenges.
The movie made its initial debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and is set for a limited theatrical release in the United States on October 11, distributed by A24. Additionally, it will be released in the United Kingdom on January 1 through Studiocanal.
Garfield’s full interview on “Happy Sad Confused” is anticipated for release soon, providing more insights into the film and the on-set experiences.
