Fashion Icon Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91

MILAN (AP) — Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer known for his understated elegance and groundbreaking impact on global fashion, has died at the age of 91, his fashion house confirmed. Armani passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy that shaped modern style.
His death comes just before the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Giorgio Armani brand, which were set to take place during Milan Fashion Week later this month. His fashion house described his passing with “infinite sorrow,” reflecting the profound loss felt by colleagues and fans alike.
Armani began his journey in the fashion world in the 1970s, where he introduced relaxed silhouettes that shifted men’s fashion from rigid tailoring to fluid designs. He gained fame through films like “American Gigolo,” where actor Richard Gere showcased Armani’s signature looks, further cementing the designer’s influence on Hollywood.
Not only did Armani excel in clothing design, but he also expanded into various lifestyle sectors, including cosmetics, home furnishings, hotels, and restaurants. His empire, valued at over €10 billion, included over 600 stores worldwide and an employee base of more than 9,000.
Born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, Armani initially pursued a path in medicine before discovering his passion for fashion while working as a window dresser. In 1975, partnered with Sergio Galeotti, he launched his menswear line, followed by a successful womenswear line that introduced the “power suit” to the professional world.
Over decades, Armani’s designs garnered a reputation for elegance, characterized by muted palettes and soft fabrics. He became a prominent figure during the 1980s, dressing celebrities such as Jodie Foster, George Clooney, and Anne Hathaway at prestigious events like the Oscars.
Despite achieving immense success, Armani remained private about his life, describing himself as a workaholic. He was actively involved in philanthropy, supporting various causes, including children’s charities and AIDS awareness, and served as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.
His influence extended beyond fashion, impacting the way the world perceives elegance, with his designs representing a blend of luxury and practicality. As his team prepares to honor his vision, the fashion world mourns the loss of a true icon.
