Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan Joins BJP, Cites Better Prospects
Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan, announced his surprising decision to switch allegiance from the Congress party to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing better opportunities within the BJP. Speaking to ANI, Chavan highlighted the increasing influence of the BJP on both national and state politics.
Chavan expressed his disappointment with the current state of affairs within the Congress party, noting a lack of readiness for upcoming challenges. He emphasized that the BJP’s trajectory and growth presented more promising prospects.
Following his exit from the Congress earlier in the week, Chavan’s move to the BJP dealt a significant blow to the grand old party in Maharashtra, alongside other notable exits such as Baba Siddique and Milind Deora. Chavan has quickly been named as the BJP’s candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra.
Responding to criticisms from Congress’ Maharashtra in-charge, Ramesh Chennithala, Chavan defended his decision by mentioning his past contributions to the Congress party, including his role as Chief Minister during challenging times like the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attack in 2008.
Chavan also addressed speculation and denied any long-standing desires to join the BJP, highlighting his commitment to the Congress until recent discontent and lack of preparation within the party propelled his decision to switch sides.
Looking ahead, Chavan expressed his eagerness to work with new colleagues in the BJP and focus on pressing issues in Maharashtra like Maratha reservation, farmer concerns, and unemployment, underscoring his readiness for a new chapter in his political career.
