Robert Kraft New England Patriots Sale Announcement

Foxborough, Massachusetts — New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has agreed to sell an 8% stake in the NFL team to two investment groups, valuing the franchise at $9 billion.

The deal will see Sixth Street Capital acquire approximately 3% while businessman Dean Metropoulos takes about 5% ownership. Kraft initially purchased the Patriots for $172 million in 1994.

According to sources with direct knowledge of the transaction, the funds from this sale will remain on the team’s balance sheet, suggesting the post-money valuation of the Patriots exceeds $9 billion. Notably, the deal does not include the New England Revolution, the Major League Soccer team also owned by the Kraft family.

The sale of the minority stake must obtain approval from the NFL’s finance committee, which also has two other minority stake sales slated for a vote in October. This includes a 10% share of the New York Giants to Julia Koch, potentially valuing the team at $10.3 billion, and a 3.2% share of the San Francisco 49ers to Fortress Investment Group Chairman Pete Briger Jr. at an $8.6 billion valuation.

Gillette Stadium, home to the Patriots since 2002, was renovated in 2023 at a cost of $250 million. Last season, the team generated $118 million in ticket sales, ranking 11th in the NFL.

The Patriots have a storied history, winning six Super Bowls, which ties them with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most in NFL history.
