Actor Sean Kaufman Reflects on Breakout Role in ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’
NEW YORK, NY – Sean Kaufman, who plays Steven in Amazon Prime’s hit series ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty,’ has opened up about his experiences during the show’s third season. The series, based on Jenny Han‘s novels, has become a cultural phenomenon, especially during its final season.
Kaufman, 25, expressed gratitude for the opportunity this role has provided him and his hopes of becoming a figure for Asian actors in the industry. ‘I do want to be a figure for Asian actors, and young Asian actors, especially,’ Kaufman stated during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The show has depicted a complex love triangle involving Kaufman’s character, Belly, portrayed by Lola Tung, and love interests Jeremiah and Conrad, played by Gavin Casalegno and Christopher Briney, respectively. Kaufman highlighted the significance of representation, recalling the impact of seeing Steven Yeun in ‘The Walking Dead.’ ‘He was just a dude who happened to be Asian in the apocalypse,’ Kaufman said.
As the series nears its conclusion, Kaufman shared his thoughts on the bond he has developed with fellow cast members. ‘They’re my best friends,’ he remarked, noting how the close-knit group has been crucial to navigating their newfound fame together.
Kaufman noted the surprising surge in popularity during this season, stating, ‘It’s been surreal. I think I’m beyond grateful for it.’ He shared how the audience’s investment in the characters adds to the satisfaction of their performances.
Looking back on the series, Kaufman admits that the experience has transcended his expectations. He acknowledges the special connections formed among the cast and the supportive environment they created while working together.
With the season finale approaching, Kaufman feels confident about Steven’s journey. ‘I think he’s finally in a place that he could feel comfortable with,’ he said, referring to the character’s growth throughout the season.
As for the finale, Kaufman allowed that the story arc was both unpredictable and engaging. ‘Jenny’s a trickster… I was always a little worried,’ he confessed, referencing the show’s ability to take surprising twists.
‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ season three finale premieres Wednesday on Prime Video, and Kaufman hopes the audience will resonate with the concluding arcs of the characters they have grown to love.
