Atlas 5 Rocket Launch Project Kuiper Satellites

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — An Atlas 5 551 rocket from United Launch Alliance is set to launch 27 Project Kuiper satellites for Amazon on September 25, 2025. The liftoff is scheduled for 8:09 a.m. EDT (1209 UTC) from Space Launch Complex 41.

This marks the third launch of these satellites, part of a broader mission to build a low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation. With today’s launch, Amazon will have deployed a total of 129 satellites into LEO, following earlier launches that included 102 satellites from previous missions using Atlas V and Falcon 9 rockets.

The new satellites will be positioned at an altitude of 280 miles (450 kilometers) and controlled from Amazon’s 24/7 mission operations center in Redmond, Washington. The team will assess each satellite’s health before moving them to a higher operational altitude of 392 miles (630 km).

This launch is also notable as it coincides with the final mission of the Delta 4 Heavy launcher, which will carry a classified payload (NROL-70) for the U.S. government. The Delta launch will mark the 389th flight since the rocket’s debut in 1960.

In addition to today’s mission, ULA has plans for another Atlas V rocket launch on October 6, 2025, slated to send two prototype Kuiper satellites into orbit. The new launches have been optimized for efficiency as the demand for satellite internet access continues to rise.

“We remain committed to expanding internet access via our satellite constellation in order to meet growing global demand,” said Tory Bruno, CEO of United Launch Alliance.
