Nashville, TN – Donna Jean Godchaux, the influential vocalist for the Grateful Dead from 1971 to 1979, passed away on November 2, 2025, after a prolonged battle with cancer. She was 78 years old. Her family confirmed her death in a statement, noting that she died at Alive Hospice surrounded by loved ones.

The statement described Godchaux as a “sweet and warmly beautiful spirit,” and added that “all those who knew her are united in loss.” The family has requested privacy during this time of grieving. In a heartfelt tribute, they quoted Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter: “May the four winds blow her safely home.”

Originally born Donna Jean Thatcher in Florence, Alabama, Godchaux began her music career as a session singer in Muscle Shoals, where she worked on hits such as Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” She later moved to California and, in 1971, joined the Grateful Dead with her husband, Keith Godchaux, who played keyboards for the band.

During her time with the Grateful Dead, Godchaux’s vocals were crucial to the band’s sound, allowing her to feature prominently on albums including Europe ’72 and Wake of the Flood. She often sang lead on songs like “Dancin’ in the Streets” and “Passenger.” Her presence helped to shape the band’s innovative sound through one of its most significant eras.

After leaving the Grateful Dead in 1979, the couple formed the Heart of Gold Band. Tragically, Keith died in a car accident in 1980, shortly after their band’s first performance. Following his death, Godchaux continued her career, marrying bassist David MacKay in 1981 and later forming the Donna Jean Godchaux Band, which toured and released new music.

Godchaux’s last studio album, Back Around, was released in 2014, reflecting on her personal and artistic journey. Throughout her career, she remained connected to the music community, participating in projects with various bands and contributing to the legacy of the Grateful Dead.

Her contributions to music were recognized in 1994 when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Grateful Dead. She also received accolades from the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

As fans and friends remember her legacy, Godchaux leaves behind a rich musical heritage that has impacted countless artists and music lovers alike.
