Mackenzie Lee Trottier’s Remains Found After Long Search

Saskatoon police have announced some heartbreaking news: they found the remains of Mackenzie Lee Trottier at the Saskatoon landfill after a long and intensive search that lasted over three months.

Mackenzie, who was just 22 years old, went missing in December 2020, and the search for her body began on May 1, 2024. Initially, the search was expected to last only 33 days, but it turned out to be a much longer process.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Police Chief Cameron McBride shared that searchers recovered partial remains on July 30, 2024, and then made a complete recovery on August 1, 2024. The results were confirmed through dental records.

Following the recovery, an autopsy was performed, but the cause of Mackenzie’s death is still undetermined as investigations continue by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

Paul, Mackenzie’s father, expressed gratitude to everyone who helped during the search, saying, “Today, we have the answers we were searching for. Mackenzie is home.”

Authorities believe they have identified a suspect in Mackenzie’s disappearance, but sadly, that individual has also passed away due to a drug overdose before any evidence could be established. This suspect was known to Mackenzie, though details about their relationship have not been disclosed.

Through a search of the suspect’s phone, investigators were led to the landfill, utilizing GPS data from garbage trucks to locate the right area to search. Forensic anthropologist Ernie Walker also assisted, pointing out that searching through 5,000 tonnes of garbage over 93 days was no easy feat.

The police had previously released a video of another man who may have information about Mackenzie’s case; however, this individual is not thought to be connected to her death.

Now that the search has concluded, the no-fly zone that was enforced over the landfill has been lifted, marking a significant moment for the community and Mackenzie’s family.
