Nationwide Recall of Organic Carrots Due to E. coli Contamination
A widespread recall of organic carrots has been issued due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O121:H19. The recall affects multiple brands of organic whole and baby carrots supplied by Grimmway Farms and distributed across 19 states in the U.S., as well as in Canada and Puerto Rico.
The recalled products include various brand names such as 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O Organics, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry. These carrots were sold in different packaging sizes and had best-by dates ranging from September 11 to November 12, 2024.
The recall was triggered by an outbreak of E. coli infections, with 39 confirmed cases, 15 hospitalizations, and one death reported as of November 16. Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting, and can begin anywhere from a day to 10 days after consuming contaminated food.
Consumers are advised not to eat or serve these products and to dispose of them immediately. It is also recommended to sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled carrots to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Anyone concerned about E. coli infection should contact their healthcare provider.
A full list of the recalled products, including specific lot numbers and UPC codes, can be found on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. Local health departments and food safety agencies are working with retailers to ensure the recalled products are no longer available for sale.
