LOS ANGELES, CA — Director Celine Song‘s romantic comedy, “Materialists,” has surpassed $100 million in global ticket sales, becoming the first independent film in 2025 to achieve this milestone. As of September 19, the film has grossed $101.3 million worldwide against a production budget of $20 million.

The film has earned $36.5 million in the United States and an impressive $64.8 million internationally. It features stars Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans in lead roles, portraying a New York City matchmaker caught in a love triangle between a wealthy suitor and her ex-boyfriend.

“Materialists” opened in mid-June to $12 million, marking A24‘s third-largest domestic debut, following “Civil War” and “Hereditary.” The film’s success can be attributed to A24’s strategic marketing, promoting it as a classic romantic comedy instead of typical indie fare. Its summer release provided counter-programming against major blockbusters such as Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” and Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.”

Viewer discussions on social media surrounding themes like the cost of living in New York and the ethics of transactional dating also contributed to the film’s sustained interest.

“Materialists” is only the third film from A24 to cross the $100 million mark, joining previous hits “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Civil War.” In 2025, the studio has experienced mixed results at the box office with successful titles like “Bring Her Back” and disappointing performances from films like “Eddington” and “The Legend of Ochi.”

This success marks a significant achievement for Song, who made her directorial debut with the love-triangle drama “Past Lives,” which earned $42 million globally and received two Oscar nominations. She is now working on a script for a sequel to the iconic 1997 romantic comedy, “My Best Friend's Wedding,” starring Julia Roberts.
