Tribute to a Liberation Hero: Honoring the Legacy of PG
This tribute serves to honor a remarkable individual who dedicated his life in service of the nation. We gather to celebrate the profound impact of his efforts while extending our heartfelt condolences to the Gordhan family.
The subject of our tribute, affectionately known as Comrade PG, embarked on a selfless journey, prioritizing the needs of his community in Durban and the broader South African nation. From his early days as a student activist, his unwavering commitment to the liberation movement was evident, and the nation continues to benefit from his dedication.
Despite facing detention and torture, PG remained steadfast in the liberation cause. When called upon, he emerged as a strong organizer for the ANC, SACP, and Umkhonto we Sizwe. His contributions helped shape the progressive Constitution, ensuring state accountability to uplift the underserved and pursue a non-racial, non-sexist democratic South Africa.
PG was instrumental in the early democratic Parliament, where discussions and legal enactments focused on improving the lives of the working class. His legacy is perhaps most notably marked by the world-class South African Revenue Service (SARS) he helped establish, which successfully allocates 60% of the state budget to supporting working-class communities.
Today, the fruits of his labor are seen in social relief for 27 million people, free basic education complete with meals, funding for tertiary students through NSFAS, the construction of over 4 million RDP homes, and the provision of subsidized public transport, water, and electricity to millions.
In response to the 2008 global economic crisis, PG’s leadership in crafting a stimulus package was critical in stabilizing the economy and saving millions of jobs. Even amidst a decade marked by significant corruption, he courageously stood against state capture.
In his final years, PG dedicated himself to reviving entities like Eskom, SAA, and Transnet from near collapse. Under his guidance, South Africa has emerged from severe challenges such as load shedding, and SAA is operational once again.
While PG was not without flaws, his integrity, courage, and commitment to the Constitution and the people were undeniable. He advocated for the state’s developmental role and sought solutions for workers in public enterprises.
The Gordhan family’s support enabled PG to serve selflessly, and the nation remains grateful to have been led by such a distinguished veteran. Hamba kahle Mkhonto, qawe lama qawe!
