John Hunt Reflects on Legacy of Love After Family Tragedy

Bushey, Hertfordshire – In his first interview since the tragic loss of his wife and two daughters, BBC racing commentator John Hunt shared how the love they left behind continues to sustain him. The emotional conversation aired on BBC News and featured John and his daughter Amy discussing their profound grief while reminiscing about the joyous moments with Carol, Louise, and Hannah.
Nearly a year after the July 2022 murders, John revealed, “From the moment I wake up, I say good morning to each of them.” He recalls daily conversations with his late family members, reinforcing their lasting presence in his life.
John and Amy decided to speak publicly to honor their loved ones and to correct what they viewed as inaccurate media portrayals following the incident. “They became victims of Kyle Clifford,” Amy stated, emphasizing their desire to remember her mother and sisters as vibrant individuals rather than statistics.
On the day of the horrific event, Kyle Clifford fatally attacked Carol, who was 61, and Louise, 25, before turning a crossbow on Hannah, 28. The attacks occurred in the family’s home in Bushey. John believes that Hannah’s courageous actions in notifying emergency services saved his life.
Describing how the family’s close-knit bond shaped them, John recalled simpler times filled with family dinners and outings. Louise, who owned a dog-grooming business, and Hannah, who worked in beauty aesthetics, had always been very supportive of their father’s career as a commentator.
The relationships were not without challenges. Amy noted that while there were signs of discord leading to Louise’s breakup with Clifford, there were no obvious indicators of his potential for violence.
As they navigated the criminal justice process, John praised law enforcement and their support team, despite grappling with a system he described as “not fit for purpose.” He pointed to key moments in court that exposed the severity of the case to media, often without them being prepared.
Amy expressed frustration over media misrepresentations, recalling the sensationalized headlines and claims of an abusive relationship that were not reflective of their family’s reality.
Despite the pain, John and Amy strive to heal and honor their family’s memory. John stated, “Hannah gave me life… I’ve got to treat it as a gift from her.” Through daily reminders and the unconditional support of his daughter, he is slowly finding light in the darkness.
“It’s a beautiful thing to recall,” he said about their shared memories, which continue to guide him in this difficult journey.
